Fundraising is a part of a good organization's business.
After your organization's mission, it's reason for being & purpose for being and gathering members, is the need to conduct the business of your organization. This creates an opportunity to shape the goals and activities of the memberships value to each other and surrounding community.
It's when conducting association or nonprofit business, such as, paying bills, generating new/steady membership interest and funding programs or seeking capital to continue membership agreed upon programming & shared events (with constituents/communities), that receives the most time.
Among the challenges of running an member-driven organization, philanthropy or programming of the organization is a paramount business item. It's many times, what either distinguishes the group's membership to the external community or what it's membership agrees is a worthy undertaking...,
or, both!
One will note that fundraising, can very well be a common thread for addressing each of these
activities and will most likely be discussed as a possible funding solution in carrying them out.
Fundraising - as noted by volunteers, active members and organization leaders - may very well play
a direct or indirect role in each of those activities and usually dominates many group discussions.
Fundraising is both necessary and effective, when done well.
In the absence of fundraising that is attractive to the membership or appreciated by the eventual customer or base of support (member family & friends, community supporters, etc.), the alternatives
to a fundraising option become all the more necessary - and, definitely less-attractive in the long-term.
Alternatives, such as, raising membership dues, enlisting program fees or reducing program benefits,
or pulling together a proposal for locating and enticing a donor can all further dominate the
membership's time as it works through, plans and cultivates the implications of each option.
Fundraising is the better choice!
Having a fundraising program, as a part of service, even periodically or as a targeted response to fund a groups specific event, CAN truly work without the undue hardship proposed by the alternatives. Fundraising will lessen and even can eliminate any threat to your membership's pocket-books, your organization's limited schedule (time), or image 'stress' by under funding a worthy programming event.
Fundraising works well when there's credible individuals & worthy fundraising programs to promote.
The question becomes, where can your team find the time to research the endless and mindless types
of fundraising and the details of each fundraising option to identify and initiate a successful discussion regarding the one that's credible, worthy and effortless (good products, effective use of time
and no-to-low up-front expenses) for your membership's style? Your member's schedules? Or, your organization's Return On Investment?
